Environmentally Aware and Socially Responsible

We are committed to working with factories that have a clear statement about their approach to sustainability and we create collections that minimise our impact on the environment, using environmentally friendly production techniques and by supporting local causes.

Handmade by artisans

We work with small family owned factories and with local independent artisans in Bali for the production of our designs to keep our artisan roots sustained in our brand.

 Longevity & Quality

We focus on longevity in contrast with fast fashion. We create designs that stand the test of time made in small production runs and with enduring materials.

 Limited Edition

Produced in small batches to maintain the exclusive handmade nature. We offer a collection of limited edition pieces that you won’t be able to find anywhere else.

Putting Values into Action

Our vision at Black Book the Label has always been to create timeless, seasonless pieces that respect People and the Planet. We take measures at every step in our manufacturing, logistics and business processes to ensure we reduce the impact on the environment; whilst ensuring the equitable, fair and ethical treatment of all workers involved in our supply chain.

We run our business sustainably by staying true to our social and environmental philosophy:

  • A responsible production model means we do not work with intermediaries, agents or third parties in the creation of our collections. By maintaining direct contact with our suppliers, we are able to work with those suppliers we feel best match our values.
  • We always insist on working with environmentally friendly and socially responsible partners who can provide us the traceability and certifications to confirm compliance with our standards.
  • We avoid overproduction and mass clearance sales. Not only is it good business sense, it is also better for the environment. This allows us to create hand-crafted, high quality designs that our customers love. We closely align our production volumes with our customers’ demand to ensure close to zero waste.

Our People + Planet program is a work in progress, and we are working towards improving at every opportunity. Here are the main milestones we have achieved to date:

People

All Black Book The Label suppliers must sign up to the Black Book Code of Conduct which includes compliance regarding Labor standards, Child labor, anti-discrimination practices, working hours, right to compensation, Health and Safety and Corruption. In addition, we do regular visits to ensure compliance with these standards.

Black Book does not work through intermediaries, third parties or agents; our supply chains are managed directly by ourselves to ensure better oversight and compliance with our values.

This means that you can have confidence that all CO2 has been reduced to net zero according to the Carbon Neutral Protocol.

  • Sustainable Fabrics

We favor the most sustainable alternatives when sourcing fabrics for our collections- always insisting on credible certification from our suppliers. Currently the fabrics used in our collections are certified by 5 of the industry’s most reliable certifications:

FSC

The FSC Chain of custody certification is how the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) verifies that forest-based materials such as cellulose and bamboo pulp are produced according to FSC’s rigorous standards all along the product’s path from the forest to becoming finished goods.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification ensures that woven materials have met human-ecological requirements. This certification ensures that every component of the product, from the fabric to the thread and accessories, has been rigorously tested against a list of up to 350 toxic chemicals.

This continues to be a work in progress. We will continue to encourage our suppliers to provide a wider range of environmentally friendly fabrics and to strengthen the traceability of these fabrics. Our objective is to increase the % of sustainable fabrics in our collections as they become available.
